How to monitor Raid on a Hypervisor server?

Hello all!

I have 2 servers (dell R420) running vmware hypervisor 5.5 and 1 server running version 5 I installed a few windows servers VM machines on them and everything is running great however I can't find a way to monitor the Raid and the hard drives state from the windows client is there a plugin I need to install or a license I need to buy? I can't find useful information on the vmware website I find it confusing.

I attached a screenshot of the storage monitoring I have now it does not show the actual controller which is the H710.

I am using the free vshpere client version 5.5.0 build 1618071

Thank you for your help!

Complete list of limitations for the free ESXi version

$

I see that the issued is discussed in many topics, but up to now I was unable to locate a complete list of the limitations for the free ESXi version.

Based on my experience and on what I read the limitations for ESXi 5.5 free include:

  • Maximum number ov 8 vCPU for each VM
  • Remote management tools (PowerCLI, vCLI and so on) can perform only read-only tasks
  • Backup API have limitations so that many third party backup solutions don't work

Are the above limitation true?

Is there any other limitation to be considered?

Is there a comprehensive document or KB article listing all the current limitations?

Web Client needed to edit virtual machine settings

$

We have several VMware environments that I help to manage. So that we can train junior members on using VMware, we have a few standalone hosts running v5.5u1.

One of my colleagues copied a VM built with Workstation 10 to this host and received an error about the VMDK being invalid. They tried to resolve the issue by getting the host to upgrade the VM. The VM now shows as being "VM Version: vmx-10".

The network for this VM is set to not connect at power on, so we have no networking on this VM. If we right-click the VM in vSphere Client and choose Edit Settings, we receive this message:

"You cannot use vSphere Client to edit the settings of virtual machines of version 10 or higher.

Use the vSphere Web Client to edit the settings of this virtual machine."

I know the Web Client for standalone hosts wasn't available on 5.1, and I imagine this is the same with 5.5. Is this correct? My attempts at trying to load a page like that fails.

Is there a command that I can use to "downgrade" the VM version to one where I can edit the settings with vSphere Client?

Its not great that you can do this and then end up stuck without being able to edit the VM settings. Surely they could detect if the host is connected to a vCenter and only allow that option if it is.... or warn before you perform the upgrade!

Thanks,

Neil

Expand Space without Rebooting VM

Hi, is there a way that I can expand virtual disk space without rebooting VM.

I know that there is a command to recognize the device, but the device is already recognized (such as /dev/sdc), But now I need the OS (Linux) to recognize the additional space without rebooting.

thanks

Re-scan the SCSI Bus to Add a SCSI Device Without rebooting the VM using the following command

echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host#/scan

anyone can help to confirm: dose VMware vSphere Hypervisor (free version) include VADP function?

ESXi Host FC HBAs Not Updating New LUN Targets

$

Greetings all!

Looking for some help here with a strange storage issue I’m seeing.

Our ESXi 5.01 hosts are fiber connected with qlogic hbas to an IBM XIV SAN, through IBM SVC clusters.

The storage team moved some of the ESX LUNs (RDMs and VMFS datastores) from one SVC I/O group to another.  The LUN IDs aren’t changing—just the targets.

The trouble is, ESXi isn’t recognizing the updated targets.  It sees the paths of the old targets and it sees them as active; but, we can’t get the hosts to update the targets.

We’ve tried moving the LUNs with all the hosts accessing these LUNs being powered off, and we’ve tried it with them being powered on.  We’ve tried multiple rescans with no change.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

ovftool vmodl.fault

Hello!

Sorry for the newbie question. But I'm not sure how to get started.

Currently I have a server running Linux with VM workstation 8.0.3

I moved one of my session from the linux server to my desktop and converted it to *.ovf with VM workstation 8.0.4 build 744019

I am trying to move my sessions to ESXi 3.5 and have found that I need the ovftool. Somewhere I read that ESXi 3.5 only supports ovf files that are version 0.9 but 1.0 is backwards comparable. I managed to find VMware-ovftool-1.0.0-166674-win.i386 and gave it a try. Several hours later I gave up.

While I was searching for solutions to my problems with ovftool-1.0 I found that ovftool-3.0.1 should work as well.

That is where I am now.

C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware OVF Tool>ovftool.exe -ds=datastore2 "C:\Users\ron\Desktop\CorpVM\Puff Corporate VM.ovf" vi://root@192.168.1.30

I have searched for vmodl.fault.InvalidRequest but haven't found much of anything.

If anybody could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!

1 Physical CPU Limitation

Is it correct that Hypervisor Free will only support 1 Physical CPU with unlimited cores?

Effectively no point in adding an additional physical CPU to a server if you require to continue using the free version of Hypervisor.

To increase physical CPU to 2 I would need to purchase the VMware vSphere Essentials Kit?

ESXi 5.5 Console Unresponsive

$

Currently experiencing a problem using the vSphere Client console (and Workstation 10 console) to access one particular VM running on ESXi 5.5.0 hypervisor.  When clicking within the console, keyboard and mouse input is captured but no action is taken.  i.e., after clicking within the console window, the mouse cursor disappears, and if the focus is in an input field, no characters are received when typing with the keyboard.  Because this is the initial startup screen it is the Windows logon.  Problem only affects one VM, all others work fine and the problem VM can be accessed without issues using Windows RDC.

VM was originally created from a Paragon HDM 14 backup of a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine using Paragon HDM 14 to create a vmx-9 VM. Opened this using VMware Workstation 10 and had no issues using the console to access the VM.  Had to deal with a few hardware problems as original physical machine used fingerprint logon but after sorting these issues out, access via VMware Workstation 10 was smooth.

vCenter Converter Standalone Client was then used to upload to an ESXi instance.  Originally showed that VMware tools was not installed although the Workstation 10 version of tools was installed.  After starting the VM, ESXi conceded that tools were installed and current.  On this initial install was not able to interact with the console but could logon using RDC.  Used vSphere Client to reinstall VMware tools and discovered two versions of VMware Tools were installed; 9.6.x from Workstation 10 and 9.4.x from vSphere Client 5.5

Uninstalled both versions of VMware tools and restarted.  Still cannot interact with console.  Installed only the vSphere Client version (9.4.x), restarted and still no luck.

Using VMware Workstation 10 to access the VM running on ESXi still doesn't allow interaction with the console although when the VM was running on VMware Workstation 10 console interaction was fine.

Have similar issues been noticed before?

Any pointers on how to resolve as there are no obvious error messages.  That said I am not that familiar with debugging issues like this and may not be looking in the right places.

Vsphere - Promiscuous Mode?

I have a VM that runs in the Vsphere Hypervisor.   I am attempting to install a VPN utility (SoftEther) that requires the network adapter to be set in Promiscuous mode. After reviewing ESXI documentation, it tells me to go the "Configuration" tab, but that tab is missing.

Is it possible for me to configure my network adapter as such? I called tech support and they pointed me here.

To use IBM customization 5.5.0 or Vmware 5.5.0 image

I'm new to Esxi I and I about to make two new hosts and was wondering if I should use the IBM images or the Vmware images.  I'm going to install the 5.5.0 image and wanted to make sure I was not going to miss any drivers.  The servers I'm using are IBM x3650 M3 7945AC1.

Thanks,

Cheapest license for standalone ESXi

$

Hi Community,

can't answer the simple question by myself. We have powerful standalone server with only 1 VM that requires 24 vCPUs. Unfortunately ESXi free license has limitation of 8 vCPUs per VM.

I was thinking about buying vSphere Essentials license, but in its datasheet i found the following statement "VMware vSphere Virtual Symmetric Multiprocessing enables the use of ultrapowerful virtual machines that have up to four virtual CPUs".

So, what are my options now?

Dropped RX packets in Windows VM only

$

Hi,

I have had an SR open with VMware support for a month now but we are no closer to a fix. I was hoping someone has experienced a similar problems and may have the solutions.

I am seeing dropped received packets for all my Windows VM but none of the RHEL VM under ESXtop. Netstat indicates issues too

The issue appears for Windows VM regardless whether it is 2003,2008 or 2012. Most of NIC are using vmxnet3 but I am seeing the issue regardless of NIC driver in use. I am seeing this at physically separated sites but only in those that are used for replication.

The VM are connected to a VDS which makes use of 10 Gbps connectivity and are located on two different clusters which make use of same storage backend (IBM N-Series 6240).
I have come to the following conclussions:

Site A:

-It is not vDS related as I moved VM to a vSS and packets still drop

-It is not pNIC related as my two clusters ( One HP DL380 and other DL560 )use different hardware and different type of pNIC. Therefore it is not a driver issue and I tried upgrading the driver

-Although no sign of contention, I evacuated hosts of all VM except one to rule out it out. I still noticed the dropped packets.

-I moved VM to local storage just in case there is something storage related but I still saw dropped packets

Site B:

-Same behaviour and these hosts have completely different hardware (IBM hosts) so not hardware or driver related.

Site C:

-I have a couple of DL380 hosts that make up a cluster and this one does not have any issues. It uses same make of storage backend but different model. All networking is configured the same and VM's are rolled from same template.

The thing that Site A and B have in common is that they use same type of backend storage. These are used for replication so we can use SRM.

Some things done in an attempt to fix it:

-Ensure that ESXi was patched to 5.1 U2. This did not make any difference

-Tested adjusting the buffers for the guest OS nic as per VMware's advice. This did not make a difference

-VMware asked to create vanilla windows VM. No software or joined to domain. Problem still exist.

One thing that made the problem disappear is altering the guest OS MTU to 9000. I just tried this out of desperation and VMware has not given me an explanation as to why this would be.

We never had issues with MTU 1500 in guest OS and prefer not to change this. We also ran a packet trace on one of the VM and noticed that the VM actually creates packages that are bigger than 1500 bytes even though the MTU is set to 1500.

Transfer Speeds Between Virtual Machines

$

Hi

Had a search for this but cannot find anything..

I believe I read somewhere that the data transfer between 2 vm's on the same host travelled via the motherboard/hard drive and didn't travel through the network card to the switch then back again. How true is this? The transfer speeds I have seen in the past say otherwise. I am upgrading a server at the weekend and have a 140GB Exchange store that needs to go from one server to the other, if I could maximise this transfer then that would be ideal.

Any suggestions appreciated

Cheers

which esx 5.5 license allows for 16 vsmp

$

hi experts

I have an ESX 5.5 server, with two 8-core CPUs. I have the following license:

VMware vSphere 5 Hypervisor Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU). This means I would have 16 cores available to my VM

But my sole virtual machine only sees 8 CPU cores instead of the 16 that I am expecting.

EDIT:

a quick test on creating a vm shows that I can create a vm with 16 cores, but i get an error when i tried to power it on.

"Feature vsmp not licensed, requires 16 have 8".

So i guess I have a license issue. what kind of license would get me 16 vsmp?

END EDIT

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

thanks guys
