Firewall requirements for vSphere 6.5

$
0
0

I'm planning to setup a vSphere Hypervisor 6.5 in a secured environment and would like to know what outgoing and/or incoming network connections are required for normal operation. I'm planning to buy a license for 6 processors. Incoming/outgoing network connections are on a permissive basis. I would like to avoid the scenario where a VM would suddenly stop working because of a firewall issue.

Thanks!

ESXi 6.0.0b upgrade

Hi All,

We have 4 Esxi 6.0 ( version 6.0.0.2494585 ), need to upgrade to newer version as following reason.

I have no update manager installed.

So how can I do the upgrade or patch process.

Any suggestion is appreciate.

Thanks

VMware released ESXi 6.0.0 Build 2494585, which is known as the general availability build of the product, or GA. However, just a few months later in July 2015, several bugs were found which have been tagged as "Severity - critical" by VMware. They have since recommended that users update all production VMware ESXi 6.0.0 Build 2494585 Host Servers to VMware ESXi 6.0.0 Build 2809209. This is known as ESXi 6.0.0b, which was released on 7 July 2015. For more information on these bugs, see VMware Knowledgebase Article KB2111985.

NIC Passthrough not working

Hi community,

I'm having trouble setting up passthrough mode on my dell r710 running ESXi 6.0.0. I'm trying to pass one NIC to a pfsense VM WAN interface.

I used the instructions found here KB1010789 to set up pass through.  Looking at advanced settings it appears everything is set up correctly; however when everything is plugged in pfsense doesn't recognize the connection,  the NIC doesn't even light up.  I tried this blog https://vmwarehints.blogspot.sk/2012/10/pci-passthrough-direct-io-or-sr-iov.html but it did not help.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PSOD CPU issue or LSI Raid Issue

$

I been wrecking my brain and trying to find what caused my ESXI machine to have PSOD. Initially there was a faulty CPU, so I removed it, so my server currently is running on one processer. It still works as I have inserted the ram and pcie slot which the CPU1 support. PSOD still happens when I was trying to transfer files out from my Windows Server VM to another network disk. It does not happen immediately, it happen like after 30min or so and I am transferring around 32gig of files. Anyone could help me decipher the log, i am running on the latest lsi_mr3 driver btw.

How to recover a datastore after a disk failure?

$

I have an Adaptec RAID 71605Q and 8 hdds: 4x 2TB in a raid5 array, and 4x 3TB in a raid10 array. (Two connections on the card, and two of those 4-into-1 cables; one cable per array, if that makes sense.)

I'm running a standalone esxi 6.0.0 Update 2 (Build 3620759) host (I run esxi on a usb stick).

I have (had!) 2 datastores; one per array.

About a year ago, 2 drives in the raid10 array failed...I've been doing this for 29 years and have never had 2 drives in an array fail. I know others have, but I never have. Guess it's my turn!

Just for grins, I bought 2 more 3TB drives and plugged them in. It wasn't readily apparent how to recover, so I literally set it aside until the other day.

So now, I have 3 of the 4 original drives plus a new drive plugged in, and have an online / degraded array.

In esxi web client, I don't see that datastore (I can still see and use the raid5 datastore). I'd like to recover it if I can; I've spent a few hours combing the interwebs and still have had no luck, so maybe someone here can help!

Here are some commands I've run via putty, and the results:

vsphere client connection problem

$

Recently I found myself cannot connect to Esxi host at datacenter through vsphere client 5.5 by several computers (Windows 7). It shows:

vSphere Client could not connect to "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx".

An unknown connection error occurred. (The client could not send a complete request to the server. (The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.))

All VMs resume normally. And the telnet result seems normal at port 902:

220 VMware Authentication Daemon Version 1.10: SSL Required, ServerDaemonProtocol:SOAP, MKSDisplayProtocol:VNC , VMXARGS supported

However, if I access http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:902. It showed:

220 VMware Authentication Daemon Version 1.10: SSL Required, ServerDaemonProtocol:SOAP, MKSDisplayProtocol:VNC , VMXARGS supported

          SSL: Unknown SSL Error

VMAuthdSocketRead: read failed. Closing socket for reading.

SSH access has not been enabled, and I can't find any way to access the Esxi host.

Anyone got an idea on the issue?

High Availability/Failover with Free Hypervisor

$

Hi,

Our organization is new to virtualization and will be deploying the following configuration:

Two servers: primary VMWare Server (to be purchased, running 10 VMs (mostly RHEL))  and backup server (already purchased), which will come online only if failure/problems with primary.

iSCSI SAN for shared storage. Backups performed to Buffalo NAS appliance.

We have been using the free vSphere Hypervisor in testing with the VMs on the soon-to-be backup server.

We are well-aware of the advantages of the licensed version and vCenter Server.

However, we would like to continue to use the free Hypervisor and are trying to develop a high availablity/failover strategy with the backup server. I state this relatively, because this is not a time-critical environment that requires immediate availability and zero downtime.

Our current exploratory strategy:

1. Primary server goes down.

2. Start secondary server.

3. Access resource manager and login.

4. Search for and remove any locks on file system datastores (iSCSI reservations?).

5. open VMWare Client.

6. Search for and instantiate VMs that were previously managed on the primary server from shared storage.

We have not tested this and are making a number of assumptions about this process.

Does anyone have experience with this with the free Hypervisor?

Thanks,

Hi guys,

I'm unable to deploy any OVF or OVA packages on my vcenter. I get the error

Happens only with a particular cluster. The hosts are running ESXi 5.1.

Any clue why this is happening?

ASRock EP2C602-4L/D16

I just purchased an ASRock EP2C602-4L/D16 to upgrade my existing vSphere / ESXI free server. I am using two Intel XEON 2620 processors with 32gb of ram so far, probably going to max it out. Even though ESXi 5.1 is listed as tested on the ASRock and Newegg site, it will not boot. I can boot to Windows 2012 server, Debian and OpenSuse with the board, I tested all of them. I tried installing ESXi 5.1 to both a flash drive and hard drive and the install finishes fine. After reboot it hangs at the BIOS logo and there is an error code on the board. The error code will vary where I move the flash drive or hard drive, looking up the error it seems to be generic USB or Hard Drive boot errors. I know this board has the new UEFI bios and I have tried changing a bunch of settings hoping that is all that is was, since this is a server board you have to wait 5 ~ 10 minutes to test each new setting. Does anyone have any ideas?

Inspect contents of .vib before installation

I would like to install community-created .vib files, e.g. this one:

Configure ESXi 5.0 as NTP server

Call me sceptical, but I'd like to verify the contents of a .vib before installing it on servers to ensure it only installs the files it says it will in the description and nothing else.  When I open it in a text editor, there are parts I can't read.

What's the easiest way to verify the content of a vib?

I´m not able to install Acronis appliance to ESXi 5.5

Hi,

I have long been vainly try to install Acronis Backup Advance appliance for VMware ESXi hypervisor 5.5. Installation after 30 minutes fails with error message "the appliance can not be installed"

On another hypervisor ESXi 5.5 it works.

I think the problem is related to the change of licenses.

1) hypervisor has been installed with a trial license for 60 days

2) After a while I noticed free license that does not allow virtual appliance

3) I wanted to backup virtual servers by the hypervisor, so I bought and registered Essentials license that allows virtual appliance.

Please anyone know how this could be solved without having to reinstall the entire hypervisor?

Thank you so much for any advice!

Richard

will NIC Intel I219-V in the future releases be supported?

Hello and Greetings to everyone,

I am looking for informations, if the Intel I219-V will be in next releases supported? Intel now sells also this onboard-NIC on server mainboards.

The history is I try to install the free hypervirsor 6.0 u1 for a vmware testlab. 6.0.0 U1 added support for Z170 chipset, however the NIC I219-V is

not on support list, however you will find the I218-V on the list.

Is vmware including this NIC in next release? Where can I find a certified driver that can be added by PowerCli 6.x?

vCenter 6 Appliance - AD Integration Group Failing to add Rights

Fresh build and installation of vCenter 6u1.   Single AD environment.  Basic setup of nodes migrated from working and existing vCenter 6 (windows installation) into this new installation (aka AD works and is working with other vCenter 6 still).

Setup was per guide i found online + made my own notes:

##################

Now Join system authentication to AD and set permissions:

http://wojcieh.net/vcenter-server-appliance-6-vcsa-configuration/

Input Domain Details: Example  "ibm.aessatl.arrow.com"

Test

Assign "IBM\Domain Admins" to top level rights of vCenter

Global Permissions -> "+"

Select group "domain admins"

Add

Set Permission for vCenter based on same steps above

Now set the SSO permission for the appliance

vCenter Home -> Administration ->Manage

################

When I login, I get "no inventory"

When I add a user from AD it give me rights (aka AD working), so it is some kind of group permission issue.

Nothing I see in logs to guide to help debug this.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Support for guest hibernation

$

Hi.

I'm developing a driver and one of the automated tests I need to run tests that the driver behaves correctly when the system hibernates and then comes back up. So far all of the virtualization solutions I've tried either don't support this (VirtualBox, Hyper-V) or don't work quite correctly (Workstation).

Does vSphere support guest hibernation?

Thanks.
