Getting free licenses for ESXi 5.5

$

Is there any way to get free licenses for ESXi 5.5 (free version)?

As an old mywmware.com user I can get a free license for either version 5.5 and 6.

A friend that registered only few days ago can get a free license only for ESXi 6.

How can he get a license for version 5.5?

EXSi 6.7 - Fail to power one one VM for "There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation".

I have a vmware box, where there are multiple VM nodes running on it.  Today  I am trying to bring up all the  VMs after an reboot.

1. One VM failed to be brought up,  for this message "There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation",  and if I was to downsize its CPU number to be 1, then it was able to be brought up.

2. But the funny thing is, at the same time, for the  other vms on the same box, I can even increase the cpu number and have them brought up.

3. That failed one with multi-CPU had been running for months, before this rebooting.

Any clue what could be wrong ?

Thanks,

Jack

Free license ESXI 6.5 error after upgrade vom 5.5 on Dell r720

After esxi upgrade from 5.5 to 6.5 and registration for a new license I always get this error message returned:

This host has more sockets (2) than the provided license is valid for (1), please provide a different license.

The free license worked for 5.5 fine. All pages I read says that the two socket system of our old dell r720 should also work. The evaluation will end in around a month.

Can I generate a free license which better fit?

Do I need to buy a license for two socket systems?

Did I miss any settings to disable to get it work?

can VMware OEM License move to other hardware?

We have VMware OEM licenses (purchased from HP).

We bought new servers from other vendor so the question is: Can VMware OEM Licenses that are purchased through a hardware vendor (HP) be moved to other servers (not HP) owned by the same customer?

It is not a technical question but legal.

I found a document:

VMware OEM Licensing Benefits.pdf - Google Drive

According to the document we can move licenses but the document little old (january 2009).

PSOD CPU issue or LSI Raid Issue

I been wrecking my brain and trying to find what caused my ESXI machine to have PSOD. Initially there was a faulty CPU, so I removed it, so my server currently is running on one processer. It still works as I have inserted the ram and pcie slot which the CPU1 support. PSOD still happens when I was trying to transfer files out from my Windows Server VM to another network disk. It does not happen immediately, it happen like after 30min or so and I am transferring around 32gig of files. Anyone could help me decipher the log, i am running on the latest lsi_mr3 driver btw.

Upload my virtual machine from my external hard drive (vSphere)

Hi,

I have an ESXi server (v6.0), and I have a virtual machine (.vmx file) on my external hard drive (NTFS).

I want to know how I can upload my vmx file on the ESXi server ?

How can I directly attach an USB Device to ESXi host server, and import my vmx file from my hard drive instead of going over a network LAN.

Thanks.

Vmware installation not recognizing hard drives connected to Intel motherboard

When I go to install ESXi 5.1 on the server it the installation software doesn't recognize the 1TB hard drive that I have installed. I've updated the BIOS, but that didn't get me any closer to solving the problem. It also doesn't recognize the NIC either. I ran into an issue awhile ago when installing ESXi 3.5 and it couldn't recognize the IDE DVDrom drive and I had to alter the installation software. Does anybody know how to fix this?

CPU number increase lead to Operating System not found

I am runnung vsphere ESXi 4.1

I was recently told by a coworker that I could increse the number of vCPUs on my virtual machines to make them a bit faster.  I decided to try this on my OS deployment server to see if it would indeed increase my speed.  I followed the directions in the vSphere manual, for increasing the CPU number.  Once done, I started the VM and now it will not boot.  It just stays on the black screen and says "Operating System not found".  I have checked the boot order and that is right.  I also put in the install disk to try and do a boot sector fix, but the installation couldn't find the installed OS either.  ARGH!!!  Any help would be marvelous!

The other 2 VMs are running fine.

Thanks,

Tim

ESXi 5 - Longmode is disabled for this virtual machine.

Hi,

I've installed ESXi 5.0.0, 469512 onto a Dell Optiplex 755 with an Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz with 4GB RAM. In the BIOS (version A21) I have the following options enabled:

Performance-

Virtualization: On

VT for Direct I/O: On

Trusted Execution: On

Security-

TPM Security: On

TPM Activation: Active

Execute Disable: On

I'm unable to run any 64bit OSs. For example, when I try to start up vMA 5.0 VM, I get the following Virtual Machine Message:

"This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible.

Longmode is disabled for this virtual machine.
For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152.
Continue without 64-bit support?"

I've run the "Processor Check for 64-Bit Compatibility" and if confirms that I can run 64bit guest OSs.

I've tried adding vhv.allow = "TRUE"  to /etc/vmware/config, but this has made no difference.

In the vmware.log file is it does meantion "Software virtualization is incompatible with long mode on this platform. Disabling longmode." I've attached the full log file for all the details.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Paul.

Is it possible to rename a standard switch from the default vswitch0?

We are starting to create additional standard switches and would like to give them a more descriptive name.

iSCSI - DVSwitch LACP

$

I have been researching design.  I need to have a single DVswitch across the environment, (need single managment control plane for VLAN creation / migration etc..).

I have moved all my hosts to 2 x 10Gb per host.  I have SOME need for 10Gb.  I use FCOE or FC for primary block, but iSCSI for migrations and copy data.

I tried to follow various guides to get iSCSI software initiator to bind to dedicated VMKernel for iSCSI only.  THis connects to what is now a LACP uplink to our Brocade VDX fabric.

Guides and document I tried to follow:

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmware-multipathing-configuration-software-iSCSI-port-binding.pdf

VMware KB: Enhanced LACP Support on a vSphere 5.5 Distributed Switch

(Diagram below)

Create LACP bond

Next step would be to bind the VMkernel interface created and then bound to new logical LACP NIC.

This article implies that if I would NOT do LACP, but set seperate 10Gb to each port group within DV switch I could fix the issue.. but it did change that it would not allow me to bind iSCSI when more then one uplink in single DV Switch

VMware KB: Considerations for using software iSCSI port binding in ESX/ESXi

I would prefer to have a single logical 20Gb NIC and bind iSCSI to that with dedicated VMK

1) Can I bind to LACP within single DV switch and get iSCSI to bind to VMkernel?

2) If I can't get the above, what step am I doing wrong to get two uplinks within single DV Switch with ISCSI bound to each uplink / nic port

Any other links / guides that consolidate the process and provide vSphere 6 focus instructions.  The issue is that there is a lot of banter, but much is old and so lots of notes about it "should work" but trying to get it to work has not been very easy.

Thanks,

"No operating system found" after transferring Windows 2012 from ESXi 5.5 to ESXi 6.0

Hi community,

I transferred a Windows 2012 R2 VM from one ESXi 5.5 to another ESXi 6.0 via scp.

The source works fine after this on 5.5 but the same thing on 6.0 is corrupt. The machine

starts with the selection of the keyboard-layout and will not find a valid operating system.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Su VMware vSphere 6 Hypervisor quando provo a collegarmi con programma di backup Iperius ho sempre questo errore, invece su altra installazione con versione 5 non ho questo problema.

Come posso risolverlo?

On VMware vSphere 6 Hypervisor when I try to connect with Iperius backup program I always get this error, but other version 5 installation does not have this problem.

How can I resolve?

Migration Fail - Unable to access file /vmfs/volumes/551e68f9-XXXXXXXX-1f80-0025b501103f/vmhost01.abc.com (vmhost01)/vmhost01.abc.com (vmhost01)-000002.vmdk

Hi,

When I migrate a VM on a ESXi, I got the error message: Unable to access file /vmfs/volumes/551e68f9-XXXXXXXX-1f80-0025b501103f/vmhost01.abc.com (vmhost01)/vmhost01.abc.com (vmhost01)-000002.vmdk.

But the VM can operate normal, power on / power off / running / services are normally. Why prompt me the error, when I migrate to the other ESXi host (Local Disk > Shutdown VM > Migrate)?

I know the error showed the VM is missing the 000002.vmdk. Yes, I checked the datastore and the 000002.vmdk of VM was really lost.

B4, I had completed the snapshot Consolidate on the VM (no any error). After that, I want to migrate the VM to the from ESXi01 to the other host (ESXi02).

How can I fix it?

Hypervisor + Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 ?

$

After getting some malware on my home PC, I am considering wiping it out and installing vSphere Hypervisor (and then buying a 32-bit copy of Windows Vista, because my CPU is 64-bit but won't support 64 bit guest OSes).  My CPU is an "Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200".  Does anyone have reason think vSphere hypervisor won't run on it?  I don't see it in the list of supported chips, but I did see a couple of references to it in these forums.

The Intel page for the chips says "Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x)" is not included, which worries me a bit, but I don't know enough to know whether that is critical or not.  I am successfully running VMPlayer (with Ubuntu 9).

Thanks,

Cheapest SATA HW Raid solution?

I'm looking to setup a test ESXi server. I want to do a Raid1 with 2 1TB drives. I'm wondering what the cheapest supported RAID controller was. I know that I can do a look up on the HCL, but that would take forever to do a price lookup on all of the supported devices. I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction (e.g. I know that the Dell PERC 5i goes for around $75)  Thanks for your help.

Could not power on VM : msg.vmk.status.VMK_NO_RESOURCES. - Failed to extend swap file from 32768 KB to 132096 KB.

Hi,

i got this error starting a VM into an ESXi server

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Failed to power on VM.

Could not power on VM : msg.vmk.status.VMK_NO_RESOURCES.

Current swap file size is 32768 KB.

Failed to extend swap file from 32768 KB to 131540 KB.

Current swap file size is 32768 KB.

Failed to extend swap file from 32768 KB to 132096 KB.

But...

1) The system has almos 20GB of RAM free

2) The VM i would start is a brand new with 2 GB of RAM and 20GB of disk space.

3) Storage...   here is may it be the root cause.

Two Storage available directly attached to the ESXi Server

First of all we are talking about a DELL PowerEdge T420 server with 1 RAID 5 (with 3 disk of 1.8TB N-SAS) with a total capacity of 3.64TB + 1 RAID 1 of 136GB of SAS 15k disks

The Raid 5 is configured as just a single big partition (GUID Partition .... bios is booting in UEFI mode) of 3.64TB.      ESXi says to me 1.90 TB available.

I've created the VM in the RAID 5 storage.

May it be that ESXi 5.5.0  support just 2TB of disk space??    (3.64TB - 1.90TB  = 1.74TB occupated!)

If i rebuilt the DISK ARRAY having two virtual disk of 1.8TB would be better?

Thanks

Alberto

It has:

Chipset
  • Intel® C224 Express PCH

Server has two 2TB sata disks. RAID 1 is enabled, but durring the ESXI installation the wizard shows two 2TB disks instead of one disk 2TB (in RAID1).
