Hi guys,

I'm unable to deploy any OVF or OVA packages on my vcenter. I get the error

Failed to deploy OVF package: A general system error occured: Error creating disk Invalid argument

Happens only with a particular cluster. The hosts are running ESXi 5.1.

Vsphere - Promiscuous Mode?

$

I have a VM that runs in the Vsphere Hypervisor.   I am attempting to install a VPN utility (SoftEther) that requires the network adapter to be set in Promiscuous mode. After reviewing ESXI documentation, it tells me to go the "Configuration" tab, but that tab is missing.

Is it possible for me to configure my network adapter as such? I called tech support and they pointed me here.

CPU Sockets and CPU

Hi everyone,

i have a question,

I have a PC with core i5 cpu that is with a 1 socket and 4 cores with no supporting off hyperthreading,

I have installed ESXi5.5 on it, When I want to create a vm I can put 3 cpus and 3 cores per socket= 9 cores ????, and then it tells to me that I have one socket,

I think I do not know the real meaning of the cpus and cores per sockets in the vsphere web client, Can anyone help me please?

And another question, When for example we limit a cpu of a vm for 300MHZ is that limit pe each core or for all cores?

Thanks

Dropped RX packets in Windows VM only

Hi,

I have had an SR open with VMware support for a month now but we are no closer to a fix. I was hoping someone has experienced a similar problems and may have the solutions.

I am seeing dropped received packets for all my Windows VM but none of the RHEL VM under ESXtop. Netstat indicates issues too

The issue appears for Windows VM regardless whether it is 2003,2008 or 2012. Most of NIC are using vmxnet3 but I am seeing the issue regardless of NIC driver in use. I am seeing this at physically separated sites but only in those that are used for replication.

The VM are connected to a VDS which makes use of 10 Gbps connectivity and are located on two different clusters which make use of same storage backend (IBM N-Series 6240).
I have come to the following conclussions:

Site A:

-It is not vDS related as I moved VM to a vSS and packets still drop

-It is not pNIC related as my two clusters ( One HP DL380 and other DL560 )use different hardware and different type of pNIC. Therefore it is not a driver issue and I tried upgrading the driver

-Although no sign of contention, I evacuated hosts of all VM except one to rule out it out. I still noticed the dropped packets.

-I moved VM to local storage just in case there is something storage related but I still saw dropped packets

Site B:

-Same behaviour and these hosts have completely different hardware (IBM hosts) so not hardware or driver related.

Site C:

-I have a couple of DL380 hosts that make up a cluster and this one does not have any issues. It uses same make of storage backend but different model. All networking is configured the same and VM's are rolled from same template.

The thing that Site A and B have in common is that they use same type of backend storage. These are used for replication so we can use SRM.

Some things done in an attempt to fix it:

-Ensure that ESXi was patched to 5.1 U2. This did not make any difference

-Tested adjusting the buffers for the guest OS nic as per VMware's advice. This did not make a difference

-VMware asked to create vanilla windows VM. No software or joined to domain. Problem still exist.

One thing that made the problem disappear is altering the guest OS MTU to 9000. I just tried this out of desperation and VMware has not given me an explanation as to why this would be.

We never had issues with MTU 1500 in guest OS and prefer not to change this. We also ran a packet trace on one of the VM and noticed that the VM actually creates packages that are bigger than 1500 bytes even though the MTU is set to 1500.

Intel I350-T4 only recognized by Esx 5.5, not by 5.5 U2

Hi all,

I relative new to ESx, sind 5.0.

Until 5.5 all went fine, inserting the Quadport I350 in 5.5, rebooting, NICs were recognied. Made an Udate to 5.5 U2 via ESX-Cli and the four ports disappeared.

MAde the update via CD again (maybe somethng went wrong) , message, no adaper recognized. With intel igb 5.2.7 driver in Image

MAde a clean 5.5 U2 install, same message.with intel igb 5.2.5 in Image

MAde a new 5.5 Install with base image, Adapter are back with vmware-igb 2.*.

Update of the driver to 5.2.5 with cli went fine- Reboot, Host not pingable.

Does anyone have an idea?

It´s a play system no need to hurry up.

Confirm Microsoft Server licensing in clusters

$

Hello, just wanted to confirm my understanding of how the Microsoft licensing works.

Just to keep things simple.  Lets say I have a Blade chassis with 8 Blades,so 8 Physical servers with 2 physical processors in each blade.

One Vcenter server that is virtual

About 50 Vm's

If I had one HA cluster with all 50 Vm's spread out throughout the 8 Blades then I would need 25 (Windows Licenses) * 8 (physical Servers) = 200 Windows Server Licenses or 8 Datacenter server licenses.  This I believe i have right.  You get two VM's per license thats why im cutting in half

But what if I split it it up into 2 HA Clusters?  Spreading out roughly 25 VM's between the two clusters with 4 Blades in each cluster.

Then the math would work out to be

13 (Windows Licenses) * 4 (physical Servers) = 52 Windows Server licenses per cluster, so 104 licenses total.

Big Difference if it works out that i can split the clusters like so.

Now if there was an actual Microsoft Audit, do they look at it and see 8 Physical servers and require the 200 licenses or do they look at it from a cluster standpoint?

Hopefully that made sense

Active Directory and ESXi Hypervisor

http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/09/joining-vsphere-hosts-to-active-directory.htmlGood afternoon, all!

I'm working on joining my ESXi hosts to Active Directory and using Windows credentials to log in.  However, I've run into a snag that I haven't found a solution for.

I used this document as my guide for setting up the ESXi host and put a new group in ADUC called ESXiAdmins (tried with and without spaces) with the appropriate people in the group.

When I try to log in to the host using my Windows credentials, I get the message "Cannot complete login due to an incorrect user name or password."  I've checked with other users in the ESXiAdmins group and they have a similar problem.

I've checked both sides and, AFAIK I haven't missed a step.

My production stack is running a vCenter server and Active Directory - that works fine.

One difference - I haven't gotten the unknown certificate dialog on my workstation; my coworker has - but he got the same login error as I did.

I downloaded the client logs and it appears that there's a SOAP error inside - ?????

Thanks to all for looking!

Gregg

Message was edited by: Gregg Hughes I also followed this document (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/09/joining-vsphere-hosts-to-active-directory.html) and found that when I went to add permissions the Domain drop-down list didn't include the Active Directory domain. Hmmmm.

"Maximum vCPUs per virtual machine: 8"

The above is one of the limitation with ESXI 6.

What does this actually mean?

If I have a 4 physical CPU server with 16 cores each, can I assign all processors and cores to a single machine

or am I limited to a multiplier of xCPU with yCores that equals 8?

Thanks!

can VMware OEM License move to other hardware?

$

We have VMware OEM licenses (purchased from HP).

We bought new servers from other vendor so the question is: Can VMware OEM Licenses that are purchased through a hardware vendor (HP) be moved to other servers (not HP) owned by the same customer?

It is not a technical question but legal.

I found a document:

VMware OEM Licensing Benefits.pdf - Google Drive

According to the document we can move licenses but the document little old (january 2009).

Anybody? Up to date (offical) info?

ESXI 6.5 lowering syslog logging levels (again..)

$

Hi,

there were a couple of discussions about configuring the syslog logging level of an ESXi server. So, I we all know these links:

Enabling trivia logging in VMware vCenter Server (1001584) | VMware KB

and

vSphere Documentation Center

But I still have some issues in reducing the 'verbosity' of an ESXi 6.5 host:

In my config.xml in /etc/vmware/hoistd I have this code. My understanding: "Only syslog messages 'error' or more severe"

      <!-- default log level -->

     <level>error</level><!-- <level/> -->

<!-- If true, logs to syslog -->

      <outputToSyslog>true</outputToSyslog>

<!-- syslog configuration.  Only used if outputToSyslog is true. -->

      <syslog>

<!-- syslog identifier to use when logging -->

         <ident>Hostd</ident>

<!-- syslog facility to use when logging -->

         <facility>local4</facility>

But I still get syslog messages like this:

2016-11-23T18:40:48.222Z vmh-01.samos Hostd: trivia hostd[9E40B70] [Originator@6876 sub=Snmpsvc.http.HTTPService] HTTP Response: ....

2016-11-23T18:40:01.722Z vmh-01.samos hostd-probe: info -[7F9E980]

So, any explanation why this is the case?  Any other configuration file?

Or are these options overwritten somewhere?

Thanks for refreshing the discussion here.

Best.

Jumbo Frames - VMotion

$

Hi Guys,

I've inherited a VM system at my new job and looking over the configuration which I feel is incorrect but would like a steer from some on you experts.

The System

1 Dell Compellant FC Storage

3    VM Hosts

The hosts have the following NIC assigmnets

2 x 10GB cards configured a a pair, servicing all Virtual Machine VLANs

2 x 1GB cards for Management (VMKernal Port)

4 x 1GB cards for VMotion

All the 1GB cards are using an MTU of 1500

One of the Hosts is using MTU of 9000 for the 10GB cards but the other 2 are using an MTU of 1500

The switches are using an MTU of 1500 for all VLAN - HP 2920 switches, they seem to assign Jumbo Frames on the VLAN no the switch ports

Should I enable an MTU of 9000 for the VMotion cards - and switch VLAN for VMotion - and also the 10GB cards and the switch VLANs that these cards carry?

Do you have any suggestions for a better configuration?

Also, these hosts are providing a live environment. How would you suggest any changes are made to prevent an outage - if this is possible?

Any help would be really appreciated

How I solve this problem?

Backup and recovery of VM's on vSphere Hypervisor

Hello. I am new to vSphere and am a bit frustrated with VMWare. Even pre-sales, they have no one willing to discuss concerns and field questions. The only answer I get is to post my question here.

I have installed vSphere Hypervisor, converted old VMWare Server VM's and physical machines to the to the new server for testing. Things seem to be going well so far.

Question: We will only have 1 or 2 VM servers and I need to know how to backup/restore the servers and individual VM's. Do I need to purchase the VMWare vCenter or is there another option. I can backup each VM using Acronis within the VM but I am not sure that would be the best solution. Also I may want to move the VM to another server and there must be an easier way.

Thank You

Unable to install hypervisor (AMD Phenom + Gigabit Motherboard)

Hi all,

I downloaded the ISO imageof latest hypervisor yesterday.  I am trying to install hypervisor on a brand new machine (AMD phenom X6 1090T + Gigabit Motherbard + 16 GB RAM).

It boots up from the hypervisor CD and when i choose to install ESXI, it starts the consolescreen where it shows the display of various modules being loaded.

As soon as it reaches the loading of usb modules, it gets eternally stuck with the below message:
Loading module usb .....
What could be going wrong here?  The gigabyte motherboard has supportfor USB3, as the model name is called "GA-880GM-USB3".  Is this a problem?  Does the ESXI expect only usb2?

Finally, is there a solution for this?  I bought a brand new computer with high end specs, only with the hope of loading hypervisor to run multi OS.  Please help.

Cannot create additional datastores in Hypervisor 5

I have a VMWare vSphere 5 Hypervisor server running on a Dell R410 .  It has a Perc H700 configured with 4x2TB drives in RAID 10, providing me with 4TB available for use.

I have 1 data store on there @ 2TB and two guests in the store.  The first guest is 200GB and the second guest is 8GB.

I went to create another store of 2TB (or whatever is available) which would consume the rest of the space available on the disk by going into the Configuration tab, then clicking Add Storage.  When the part came up asking me to select a Disk/LUN, it does not show me the Disk/LUN.

Any help would be appreciated.

which esx 5.5 license allows for 16 vsmp

$

hi experts

I have an ESX 5.5 server, with two 8-core CPUs. I have the following license:

VMware vSphere 5 Hypervisor Licensed for 2 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU). This means I would have 16 cores available to my VM

But my sole virtual machine only sees 8 CPU cores instead of the 16 that I am expecting.

EDIT:

a quick test on creating a vm shows that I can create a vm with 16 cores, but i get an error when i tried to power it on.

"Feature vsmp not licensed, requires 16 have 8".

So i guess I have a license issue. what kind of license would get me 16 vsmp?

END EDIT

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

thanks guys
