Getting free licenses for ESXi 5.5

Is there any way to get free licenses for ESXi 5.5 (free version)?

As an old mywmware.com user I can get a free license for either version 5.5 and 6.

A friend that registered only few days ago can get a free license only for ESXi 6.

How can he get a license for version 5.5?

Execute Disable

Hi!

I have a Supermicro X9DBi-F motherboard that was running free version of ESXi hypervisor (6.0U2) since August. I upgraded my BIOS to last version from Supermicro's website (the only one available, actually). Afterwards, ESXi is giving me PSOD with message to enable "Execute Disable/No Execute CPU" option in BIOS. However, this option is already enabled. I tried doing a fresh install, but it gives me the same error while booting installation media. If I check with some Linux boot CD, /proc/cpuinfo has nx flag. I can also install MS HyperV 2016 without any problems. I already tried v6.0, v6.0U2 and v6.5 installation media (they all give the same PSOD during initial boot). I'm pretty sure the BIOS version is the only thing that changed, but unfortunately don't have previous version available. I already loaded default values in BIOS, but that didn't help. Anything else I can try?

How to change driver in ESX (not update, but change)

I have en LSI RAID controller. (9341-4i)

There exist two different drivers the the device-id of this controller:

-lsi-mr3

-scsi-megaraid-sas

ESX default load the "lsi-mr3" driver.

How do I force ESX to use the "scsi-megaraid-sas" driver instead using console?

I guess I can uninstall the "lsi-mr3" driver package and hopefully the "scsi-megaraid-sas" will be used after reboot, but I would like to be able to change driver without uninstalling.

VM automatically reverts to most recent snapshot during startup

I am trying to bring back an old sbs2003 server to the domain as there is some exchange data we need to recover. My plan is to rejoin the previously decommissioned machine to the domain, ensure AD replication has completed then isolate it from the network, seize all FSMO roles, etc and reinstall Exchange to access the EDBs. I am aware there are 3rd party tools available at cost to do this, however I want to acheive this without additional cost using ESXi Hypervisor.

I have taken a snapshot of the 2003 vm before joining the domain. I then join the 2003 VM to the domain and shutdown (instead of restart). I took another snapshot of the VM while turned off and then booted it. Everytime is gets to "Applying Computer Settings" the VM automatically reverts to my most recent snapshot and powers off.

In the "Recent Tasks" list I can see "Find entity by UUID" numerous times before the machine then reverts to the latest snapshot.

I have no idea why this would automatically occur, any thoughts?

While writing this I managed to get a successful boot but with the network set to an isolated vSwitch rather than the standard "VM Network" vSwitch. I then managed to modify the connected network to be the standard "VM Network". Everything now appears fine however if I restart this VM the same thing happens and I need to put in host only to get it to boot.

What could cause vSphere to make the machine revert to snapshot just because it is connected to the main LAN?

latest vSphere 5.5 + Intel I350-T4 = SRIOV?

We installed Intel I350-T4 Server Adapter which supports SR IOV and by doing "esxcfg-module igb -s max_vfs=7,7,7,7", we get:

Unable to set module parameters the following params are invalid: max_vfs

Please, don't tell me it's unsupported, as this is a quality, expensive Server adapter with quad ports...

Please reply as soon as possible!

I have tried to use Firefox and IE, and IE's without add-on mode.  All not working.

Could you please let me know what if anything I did wrong?  Thank you.

What am I missing if using Mobo without AMD-VI (IOMMU) [Intel's Vt-d]

Processor - AMD FX-6100

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103962

Motherboard - ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX [Micro-ATX]

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157323

I'm planning to use this combination for my ESXi whitebox.  This mobo is using chipset 7 series which does not has AMD-VI.  Souce: http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/VTd_HowTo

From the source, it even say

Even when the chipset supports IOMMU, the bios must have a ACPI IVRS table to enable the use of it! So actual support depends on the motherboard manufacturer. At the time of writing all motherboards seem to have a (beta)bios available supporting the IOMMU.

So even I'm buying mobo with chipset 890FX or 9xx series, the mobo BIOS might not support it.  So I might not able to use it even buying the more expensive mobo.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization

An input/output memory management unit (IOMMU) enables guest virtual machines to directly use peripheral devices, such as Ethernet, accelerated graphics cards, and hard-drive controllers, through DMA and interrupt remapping. This is sometimes called PCI passthrough

Do I need to use IOMMU in VCP5 lab session? as I'm using the ESXi to simulate the lab testing for VCP5, I have not think of anything to use for my whitebox later on.

In simple words, without IOMMU the VMs cannot access to the devices in host machine?  the VM can only access to those hardware devices in that computer that we use to access the VM?

High Availability/Failover with Free Hypervisor

$

Hi,

Our organization is new to virtualization and will be deploying the following configuration:

Two servers: primary VMWare Server (to be purchased, running 10 VMs (mostly RHEL))  and backup server (already purchased), which will come online only if failure/problems with primary.

iSCSI SAN for shared storage. Backups performed to Buffalo NAS appliance.

We have been using the free vSphere Hypervisor in testing with the VMs on the soon-to-be backup server.

We are well-aware of the advantages of the licensed version and vCenter Server.

However, we would like to continue to use the free Hypervisor and are trying to develop a high availablity/failover strategy with the backup server. I state this relatively, because this is not a time-critical environment that requires immediate availability and zero downtime.

Our current exploratory strategy:

1. Primary server goes down.

2. Start secondary server.

3. Access resource manager and login.

4. Search for and remove any locks on file system datastores (iSCSI reservations?).

5. open VMWare Client.

6. Search for and instantiate VMs that were previously managed on the primary server from shared storage.

We have not tested this and are making a number of assumptions about this process.

Does anyone have experience with this with the free Hypervisor?

Thanks,

Installation of free Hypervisor on HP Proliant ML310e Gen8 fails

$

Hello!

I tried to install the free and unlimited version of the VMWare vSphere Hypervisor to an HP Proliant ML310e Gen8. I registered to VMWare got a license key for that and downloaded the "VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0.update01-1065491.x86_64.iso". Sadly, this did not work as there seems to be some troubles on the drivers.

So I went to the HP site a found a "custom" built of EXSi specially created for this hardware with all drivers in it.

I installed the HP custom built and the installation runs smooth and everything is working except that I get a message on the client window bottom right which tells me that this is an evaluation version limited to 60 days. I can't use my license from the free Hypervisor to get an unlimited time period. It seems the HP custom built is a full featured version of vSphere.

So here are my questions:

What will happen after the 60 days trial period? Will vSphere shut down forever or switch to the free Hypervisor version?

Where can I get a custom built for the mentioned hardware with the free Hypervisor?

Looking forward to your comments...

Thanks in advance and best regards, Bernd

vmware on Supermicro X8SIL-F - NIC problems

$

Hello all,

I am trying to get the VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 4.1) up and running on the following server:

  • Supermicro X8SIL-F mainboard

  • Core i3-530 CPU

  • 8GB DDR3 memory

The board has an dedicated IPMI LAN port and 2x Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet Controller, which is supported according to the compatibility list.

After installing  the hypervisor, everything seems to be fine at first. I could migrate one of my VMs (Windows 2000) from the current VMvare Server 2.0.2 to the new platform and it starts normally.

But if I start transferring data via network to the VM (i.e. copying a directory tree with lots of pictures), the ethernet connection stops working totally after a while. Neither the VM, nor the mangement console can be reached from the network (ping) and alsono connection from the local management console to the outside world is possible (i.e. ping to other server).

Interesting is, that "ethtool vmnic0" outputs "Link detected: yes" before and "Link detected: no" after the loss of the network connection.

The driver used is this (output of "ethtool -i vmnic0"):

driver: e1000e

version: 0.4.1.7.1-1vmw-NAPI

firmware-version: 1.9-0

bus-info: 0000:02:00.0

I have already found this thread: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/256853, but even the IntMode=0,0,0,0 settingdid not help.

Is there anything else I con try to solve this problem? Can I somehow make use of the original Intel driver (unfortunately, I can not compile the source for x86_64 myself).

Any help is very appreciated!

Regards,

LF.

Installing vSphere Hypervisor 4.1 on Asus P6X58D-E i7 980x 12GB RAM

Hi,

Has anyone any experience with installing the VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi 4.1) on the P6X58D-E?

In my case (i7 980x 3.33GHz) during the installation process (just after I'm receiving the error:

Mod: 4145: Initialization of module vmfs3 failed.

I'm aware that error indicates something wrong with creation the file system. What is the reason of it? Maybe additional controler on PCI express would help? Which one then?

Thanks in advance.

ESXi 5 - Longmode is disabled for this virtual machine.

Hi,

I've installed ESXi 5.0.0, 469512 onto a Dell Optiplex 755 with an Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz with 4GB RAM. In the BIOS (version A21) I have the following options enabled:

Performance-

Virtualization: On

VT for Direct I/O: On

Trusted Execution: On

Security-

TPM Security: On

TPM Activation: Active

Execute Disable: On

I'm unable to run any 64bit OSs. For example, when I try to start up vMA 5.0 VM, I get the following Virtual Machine Message:

"This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible.

Longmode is disabled for this virtual machine.
For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152.
Continue without 64-bit support?"

I've run the "Processor Check for 64-Bit Compatibility" and if confirms that I can run 64bit guest OSs.

I've tried adding vhv.allow = "TRUE"  to /etc/vmware/config, but this has made no difference.

In the vmware.log file is it does meantion "Software virtualization is incompatible with long mode on this platform. Disabling longmode." I've attached the full log file for all the details.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Paul.

MSI Z87-G43 + I5-4670K cant boot/install

Hi guys,

I have been scratching my head for the last couple of hours on this one.

I just want to upgrade my well running Q9550 ESXi with some new hardware, because i needed more RAM (old setup only supports 8GB)

So i got the following with the mail today:

MB: MSI Z87-G43

CPU: I5-4670K

RAM: Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1600MHz 8GB * 2

i took the old MB, CPU and RAM out of the server, og put the new in. then i put in a freshly downloaded (4 hours ago, to make sure i had the latest) ESXI 5.1 CD and bootet it up.

I starts out fine, loading the drivers and so on, but then it hangs at "Initializing IOV ...." with a yellow/gray background.

I googled this, and found out it had something to do with the VT-X/VT-D so i went to the BIOS to see if it was enabled - It was.

I tried disabling it, just to see if that made any difference, but sadly no.

The motherboard and CPU both support VT-X/VT-D.

I have made the standard testing with memtest, to make sure the RAM was not dead on arrival (This has happened a lot to me, so i always test them) so the hardware is working.

I also tried booting the old installation from when the old motherboard was installed, just to see if i got any other errors, and it hangs at the same message.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks for reading, i hope some of you can help me!

I have attached a picture of the "initializing IOV ...." screen where it hangs.

Is it possible virtualize a real-time OS in ESXi?

Hello,

Is it possible virtualize a real-time OS in ESXi?

I want run real-time dependent applications (for example: industrial softwares) in a virtualized environment.

What I have to do for reach real-time requirements in ESXi? How do I configure? I'll have that develop some auxiliar program? Is there a API for this?

There are other softwares, but I prefer VMWare because it is more marketable.

Hi,

Can any one tell me if they are running any version of ESXi on a HP ML310e Gen8?

Basically I'm wondering if it is completely supported, the server is on the HCL, however the RAID controller( Smart Array B120i) is not listed when I search under  IO Devices.

Any advice would be appreciated.
