Virtualisation - CPU Intensive apps

Hi,

I am looking for any one experiences with using CPU intensive applications in a virtual environment.

We currently use a bespoke developed application that is deplyed on a number of workstations (Around 50). All workstations have 2x CPU with 6 Cores Each and Hyper Threading Enabled (Therefore upto 24 Threads per workstation). The are parts of the software that are limited to a fewer number of threads, but others are able to make use of 24 Thread. Our Load on the Machine is around 75% all 24 threads are usedto 25% where only 1 Thread is busy. The Workstation has a data throughput of 3TB per week interms of storage used. Occasionally we link upto 20 machines together to undertake large processes across a distributed computer system.

The system is currently being considered for virtualisation, while the software work and the models run. The issue is the time taken and also the variability in run time across the Virtual Workstations in our Test Lab envirnment. The server has 64 Cores, we are testing 4x Virtual Workstations each with 16 cores allocated with 32GB ram per workstation.

My question is should CPU intensive applications be considered for deployment in a virtualised environment.

Thanks
