Maintenance mode and graceful shutdown

Dear All,

I would like to create a script to shutdown the host (and its guests) when a power failure occure. I find a nice script on the web, and I can see that it put  the host in maintenance mode immediately, and thereafter it starts to shutdown the guests. I can not understand its purpose.

I found in the documentation: "The host is in a state of Entering Maintenance Mode until all running virtual machines are powered down or migrated to different hosts. You cannot power on virtual machines or migrate virtual machines to a host entering maintenance mode."

So the host won't be in maintenance state until the guests shuts down. I thought maybe in that state there is no network communication between clients and guests, so maybe its purpose is to keep the guest in a more consistent state, but I'm not sure.

So my question is what is the real reason behind putting the host maintenance mode before shutdown the guests?

thank you very much
